The man convicted of assassinating United States Senator Robert Kennedy in 1968 has been granted parole after 16 attempts.

Sirhan Sirhan’s release was supported by two of Senator Kennedy’s sons, who addressed the virtual hearing and said they were grateful to “see him as a human worthy of compassion and love”.

Mr Sirhan was convicted of first-degree murder and assault with intent to murder over the shooting.

California Governor Gavin Newsom will review the case before making a final decision.
